The Wedding Banquet - 6

This film is from director Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), and is in both English and Chinese. An interesting film, about the tension between honoring parents and tradition, while recognizing the uniqueness of living in the present. It brings up interesting questions about lying and truth telling. It is also insightful into parts of Taiwanese culture. Is happiness really found in others being themselves and being happy? If nothing else, a thoughtful film fleshing these questions out.

Another movie along these lines --gay guy must do the biz with suitable female for family reasons -- is Dona Herlinda and her son. I think its in Spanish -- but who cares, the situation humor is ironic and wise, and trying to balance family/friends/sexuality/life is a dilemma that I think practically any human with a functional heart and soul might relate to. The sex scenes feel like they might get uncomfortable to watch but just in the nick of time they make a joke that provides justifcation (and relief to us northern hemisphere closet prudes). It's quite a lovely film actually. The only thing I din't like about this movie (Wedding Banquet) is the throwing up scene. I cannot take unexpected bodily spasms that involve fluid emission in life or on film. Just a quirk. In fact, ould you please add a vomit warning to any of your movie reviews in future? Coz I think we really need them. They even advertised a Santa Family Christmas Special on TV a couple of years ago that had a vomiting Santa. Oh how cute. Um, not. That trailer pushed me over the edge in deciding to cancel TV and never watch it again. Humph.
