American History X - 7

One of the few movies that has made me cry. This is powerful film about the hate and evil that can make its dwelling in the human heart. It also has the theme of the influence of one's story on others. When others look up to someone, that persons character and actions take on greater meaning, and with that more responsibility. Storied living is a hard task, and made harder by our passions which lead us toward great things as well as horrendous and despicable behavior. This leads to living with regrets and can lead to a transformed living to help others learn from our mistakes and joys. Learning and character are connected, this is the puzzle of knowing who we are and what we are to become.

One of my favorite movies. Difficult to watch, though.

I am watching American History X right now and i have to say that i believe the moral of this horrifying yet incredibly real film is not just about what is happening in our world and in our neighborhoods but that there are ignorant small minded people in every race.
It is a vicious cycle that seems to never end. When the guys were on the basketball court derrick offended the other team by saying no black man was to step foot on "their" basketball court ever again if they won. In spite of derrick and his friends; two of the black guys decided to try to steal derricks truck. they were killed, and derrick was sent to prison for murder.
When derrick arrived to prison he chose to shun everyone who didn't look like him and he stuck with the white guys who he thought would share the same views as him. Once derrick saw a member of his new posse making deals with a Mexican he turned his back on them as well. in effect those very same people who he considered his friends are the ones who gagged and homosexually raped him in the shower.
The funny thing is when Derrick unintentionally made a very valuable friend or should i say saint working in the laundry room that friend just happened to be a black man.
The reason people may be so effected and hurt by this film is because everything in it is just too delicate of a matter to ever have been tested by another director before. i think if people could understand the real story they would see the beauty of the moral instead of the horror of the scenes.

that being said EVERYONE. black, white, red, yellow, green, and purple need to double think the way they treat others, because the day they decide to change their minds, could be the very day it's too late.
